According to California State Athletic Commission Executive Officer George Dodd, Chael Sonnen has been notified that he failed post-fight drug screening following his loss to Anderson Silva at UFC 117, which was held Aug. 7 at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, Calif.

“[Sonnen] received his notice yesterday,” Dodd told Sherdog.com shortly after the Shane Mosley-Sergio Mora boxing match ended Saturday night in Los Angeles.

In a conversation the day before, Dodd declined to comment on the situation, other than answering that all fighters from UFC 117 had passed drugs-of-abuse scans, but that the commission was still waiting on performance-enhancing drug screens from the event.

Dodd did not state which banned substance was red-flagged, but with a clean drugs-of-abuse scan it is clear the positive test was for a performance-enhancing substance.

The last major UFC banned-substance case in the state centered on UFC 73’s lightweight title match, which saw both competitors -- Sean Sherk and Hermes Franca -- test positive for PEDs. Both fighters were suspended for one year and fined, though Sherk appealed and had his suspension shortened to six months.

Sonnen is staring at a long layoff if he elects not to appeal or is denied. He was scheduled to rematch Silva Feb. 6 in Las Vegas, but that fight may be delayed or scrapped in light of these allegations.

Text messages to Sonnen went unreturned.

His manager Matt Lindland told Sherdog.com that he was cornering a fighter on the East Coast and had no knowledge of the positive test results.

Silva’s manager Ed Soares, who engaged in some heated exchanges via the media in the build up to the fight, was stunned when asked for his reaction.

“If it’s true, I feel really bad for him,” said Soares. “I know he did it to himself but it is really sad, he put on such a great performance that night. It is just a shame it will be tarnished.”

Exactly. All the shit about Lance Armstrong and all that, can't see why he would say all that if he knew he was cheating and was gonna get caught?

Been looking around the net, a lot of people are saying it may be down to something he took for the flu he had in the lead up to the fight.

Damn i hope its not true.

But if it is true, then thank the lord that Anderson slapped that traingle on with only minutes to go in the fight. Would have been a disaster if Sonnen won and got caught roiding.

Wouldnt be suprised if that was the case, you can take Ephedrine for fast relief of Nasal congestion, but it still is a banned substance which athletes are told to stay away from.

You get these in sports sometimes, where a medication used for medicinal purposes, makes you fail PED screen cause its banned. eg, I remember a tennis player a few years ago, getting banned because he had Salbutamol in his system while he was a known asthmatic.......

Ok, if you were in his position, leading upto the biggest fight of your life and you come down with a virus, would you seek as much advice as humanly possible about what remedies/antibiotics/drugs you can take to rectify this problem without the threat of containing any banned substance? Or would you risk everything by just cracking on ignorantly and hoping for the best?

If you're in the middle of a camp and all you can think of is fighting/competition, you're mind is one-tracked and you don't really think like that.

Bull shit, is well documented through many sports that some antibiotics and drugs have as I've already stated, the likes of ephedrine in em. You could be training your arse off, I would have sought a specialists advice on the matter instead of just firing ahead, if he's done it by accident then tough shit, you can't hide behind ignorance and if he's done it on purpose then fuck off to japan chael or sit your suspension out

Training camps for fighting? A few

Training camps for other sport (athletics, biathlon, marathons) fucking loads and as intense as they are you still think about risks, it's all about peaking at the right time, chael may have inadvertently taken it or taken it on purpose, either way, it's his own fault

Training camps for world titles are different to anything else. I've been through Olympic training camps and world championship training camps and i've seen what competitors go through and from speaking to a few fighters i know that have been through world title camps they are even more intense. Especially MMA because of all the different aspects of the camp, striking, grappling, cardio, strength. I've seen guys at different camps going through preparation for UFC fights and I've not seen anything as demanding and world title fights are far more intense.

We had a guy with the german team for Athens who had a fever and didn't want to tell anyone so he went out and got a load of medication and took it. He didn't want tell anyone because he was afraid he'd have to miss a couple of days training and that he'd fall behind in his preparation. We were testing them every week, he failed his next test and that's how we found out. He didn't think anything about it.

I'm not making excuses for Sonnen. IF he has failed, then he's failed. But Sonnen doesn't strike me as a cheat. He also doesn't strike me as someone who moans or complains. He fought Filho with a broken arm that Lindland was unaware of. However, he does strike me as someone that does and says things without thinking about the consequences.

UFC President, Dana White has tonight revealed he is still in the dark over the situation surrounding the promotions middleweight number one contender, Chael Sonnen, and just exhausted by the general situation surrounding drugs in the sport of mixed martial arts.

    Speaking via Yahoo!Sports.com, Dana said:

“What else do I do? We’ve spent millions of dollars – literally, millions of dollars – to try to get this thing regulated so they can be tested by the government. Do you know how much it costs us to put on that fighter seminar every year? Let me tell you, we’re bringing guys in from all over the world. We have guys from England, Germany, Croatia, Australia, Korea. We have 350 guys under contract and they’re coming from all over the world. It costs us a (expletive) ton, but we do it because it’s important.”

“When one of them fails a test, the government is going to fine them and suspend them and tell them they can’t make a living for a year. So should I come in after they’ve already lost the ability to make a living for a year and been fined all this money and, in the worst economic disaster in the history of the world, fine them another huge amount and take away their ability to make a living even longer?

“These are guys with homes and families and personal lives and bills and debts and obligations, just like me and you. After they lost all this money already, money that, A, they’ve probably already spent and B, which they owe taxes, do I fine them another huge amount? What else do you do to a human being?”

The UFC and Sonnen will now have to wait and see what kind of suspension and fine is issued by the governing commission, with twelve months the likely term set to be handed down. Stay tuned to MMABay in the coming days for more on this as we get it.
