Paddyjock's Heavy weight Ranking System Empty Paddyjock's Heavy weight Ranking System

Post  Paddyjock Sun Mar 28, 2010 8:24 pm

OK so a while ago we had a discussion surrounding wether Fedor was being tested enough against top fighters and should he still be the #1 HW?

I came up with a system based on Ben's ranking system....

    1. Fedor Emelianenko (+15)
    2. Brock Lesnar (+14)
    3. Frank Mir (+13)
    4. Cain Valezques (+12)
    5. Antonio Nogueira (+11)
    6. Junior Dos Santos (+10)
    7. Shane Carwin (+9)
    8. Alistair Overeem (+ Cool
    9. Fabricio Werdum (+7)
    10. Brett Rogers (+6)
    11. Andrei Arlovski (+5)
    12. Gabriel Gonzaga (+4)
    13. Aleksander Emelianenko (+3)
    14. Antonio Silva (+2)
    15. Mirko Crocop (+1)

I'm going to start a ranking system with the following rules:

    1. Fighters will get points for every win over an opponent
    2. Fighters get no points for a loss
    3. Fighters only score points in fights against other fighters in the Armbar top 15 (at the time of the fight)
    4. Beating the #1 ranked fighter gains you 15 points, #2 ranked fighter - 14 points etc until the #15 ranked fighter gains you 1 point.
    5. Only sanctioned MMA fights count
    6. Fighters will get 5 bonus points for keeping the fight out of the judges hands (ie any finish)

So for example if Carwin TKO's Mir then he will score 18 points (13 for beating Mir and 5 for the TKO)
If Fedor submits Werdum he will score 12 points (7 for beating Werdum and 5 for the Sub)

Lets see how that top 15 looks in 6 months time based on that points system?

So based on that system there are now 2 fighters that officially enter the new ranking system. Obviously as time passes all the top 15 fighters will join the list. It will really only start to make sense as more time passes but just to get the ball rolling...

    1. Shane Carwin (18)
    2. Frank Mir (0)

sounds like a good idea, but dont you want to scale it back 6 months?(start from 6 month ago and count all the fights until now?)

its a long time to wait for an experiment! Smile

Yeah could do but I guess my point is that I don't think Fedor has enough current competition where he fights to warrant being the #1 HW in the world. No doubt he actually is the best fighter but if you aren't fighting the best then you can't expect to be called the best.

Plus the points awarded are based on where each fighter is on Ben's rankings at the time of the fight. If Brock beats Carwin he will be awarded more points than if Mir had beaten him - assuming that Ben moves Carwin up the rankings now!!

fair enough, it works for golf and tennis rankings.

but those guys play multiple competitions every month.

i think the way rankings work now... a combination of peoples intelligent, reasoned opinions is good.

for example 6 months down the line Dos Santos or Gonzaga may not have fought again since they just fought...they would completely drop off the radar!

anyway it will be interesting to see the result.

I think we can go back one fight for each of the top HW's.

Fedor beat Rogers who was 7th (im certain)
Brock beat Mir who was 4th (im certain)
Cain beat Nog who was 2nd (im certain)
JDS beat GG who was 13th (I think)
Carwin beat Mir who was 3rd
    Nog lost
    Mir lost
    Rogers lost
    Overeem N/A
Werdum beat Big Foot (We didnt have a top 15 ranking at the time but i would say 14-15th)
    Arlovski lost

Like this system as it rewards fighters for 1)Fighting top quality oppositon 2)Keeping busy 3)Finishing fights Which is surely what every fighter wants to see. Couldnt you extend this for all the divisions? Be interesting to GO COMPARE rankings in the future
