    there are tonnes of them.

This year is the bi-annual S-Cup and Andy Souwer is the '02 '04 and '08 champion (he was runner up in '06) and will be looking to defend the title.

i dont know much about shoot boxing. but i figured i'd highlight it on here since some of you (ben) are big k1 fans and like watching judo throws!

it has attracted tonnes of top kickboxers and some top MMA fighters for example:

    Chris Horodecki
    Luiz Azaredo
    Damacio Page
    Jens Pulver
    Hayato "Mach" Sakurai

edit: forgot to put results of the event if anyone's interested:

So is it like mma with boxing gloves instead of the fingerless ones?

    no ground fighting!

    throws and standing submissions only.

but you get penalised for taking it to the ground to avoid submissions, and clinching up to avoid strikes etc.

Ive heard of it but not watched it before, Dont recognise any of the fighters who fought.. though there are some Awsome WWE'ish Tights on the go!! Laughing

Seems like MMA in Boxing gloves with No groundwork and standing 8 counts, Im sure its great to watch, In not the biggest fan of the groundgame in MMA, I love BJJ but Wrestlers bore the shit out of me. This looks great because MMA is Full of early stoppages from Strikes as Refs dont seem to understand the difference between Dropped and KO'd, the standing 8 count would rule out any shitty TKO decisions...

Id be really interested to watch and event (apart from the Womens fight of course!) Thanks for the post Chesty, deffo going to look up some Shoot Boxing.

Oh, that sounds like it could be really good! I'd prefer it with open fingered gloves though cos standing subs are hard to catch with gloves on.

Might have to look into this, could be fun to go and watch.

It brings up an interesting point though....

Andy Souwer is one of the best kickboxers in the world.
"A near perfect fighter" according to Schiavello.
he is 27 yo and has 145 pro fights (including shootboxing).

given that he is the best shootboxing fighter ever, he must have a degree of grappling skills right?, at least defensively.

how do we think he would do in mma?

his striking would be by far the best in the LW division, he wins alot of decisions at the highest level in K1 but overall he has 84 KOs from 135 wins so the KO power isnt really in question.

i think he could be the LW Crocop. But his style is more to throw long combo's ala Hoost.

    thoughts?

Ive seem Andy Souwer in K-1 he is a great fighter, Im sure he could batter 9/10 of the top MMA fighers in his devision on the feet... he is quite a small 155er though, he might be able to make 145lbs.

I dont know if he has any MMA experience, Ive not heard of him attempting MMA, Strange, you would think the paydays would be bigger in MMA... Id love to see him fight Aldo!!

he is probably the second best k1 max fighter in the world after petrosyan (now masato is retired) so i think its safe to say he would batter 10/10 mma lws in the feet (save for a Manhoef/Lawler incident).

its a bit long but if you want to see some serious skills on display watch these:
(the black canvas or black ropes = shoot boxing btw, quite alot of clips in there)

Quality HL's, I think he beat Masato on more than one ocasion, I dont know petrosyan though... I dont know a lot of K-1 fighters who arent heavys.

Yeah It would be hard to imagine any MMA fighter hanging in on the feet with him, He doesnt look a little small for Lw though, I think he is between 5"8 - 5"9 and regularly weighs under 155lbs. Bring on Souwer vs Aldo I say!!

yes he beat Masato twice, although in the one i've seen Masato was already battered by Buakaw (the only other k1 max fighter i know) earlier that night but won the decision.

i think if andy was interested to switch to mma as i feel hes starting to slow down in k-1 as petroysan outclassed him really twice last year and buakaw gave him a bad beating but was robbed and masato beat him handily enough at new years eve show i thought but in mma he is still on another level to anyone around 145 standing apart from aldo really maybe 2 years of BJJ and wrestling training i honestly believe he could be a force in mma

Very intresting and fun looking sport. I didn't actually know what it was, the vid helps, thanks for that. Looking at Andy's record he is impressive as a standup fighter. At 27 he is still pretty young with a ton of comabt expecrience. He could train with ATT or Jackson to help with his grappling and he could be a force at either 155 or 145. Who has the best standup in LW? BJ? Alvarez? Gomi? Andy is better than all of them I would assume and FW its the same, best one is Aldo. FW would be better I think because he wouldn't be outmuscled there (I agree with Ben he looks small for LW) by your Maynard's and Tibua's of the division. At the same time it also helps develop the FW division and Aldo/Hellboy vs Andy could be outstanding.

Do you know how many shoot boxing events they have a year?

according to their website, the events this year are:

    13 feb
    11 april
    6 june
    18 sept
    13 nov

looking at when the past S-cup has been held, it looks like the 8 man tourney will be on the November event.

the s cup is every 2 years, last year they had a female version.

I always thought that Iron Mike Zambidis would the ideal K1 Max fighter to make the switch to be honest, he's trained in Pankration which is similar in parts to Sambo so he'd have some grappling skills and his striking is excellent. He could easily make 145.

Souwer would be perfect if he could learn some BJJ. His best bet would be to go to ATT and become a disciple of Marcelo Garcia, or go to Eddie Bravo. One or the other. The two best bottom games in BJJ IMO. He doesn't need to learn a top game, cos if he's on top he wants to get back to his feet straight away!
