Strikeforce release Jake Shields !! Empty Strikeforce release Jake Shields !!

    Post  redmeanie77 Thu Jul 01, 2010 9:16 am

Strikeforce released its middleweight champion, Jake Shields, from his contract with the organization on Wednesday, according to an industry source with direct knowledge of the negotiations.

The 31-year-old Shields had been in a final-phase “matching period” of his recently completed contract with the San Jose, Calif.-based promotion, which allowed him to receive bids from other organizations, including the UFC, that Strikeforce could review and match in order to keep his services. However, the source said Strikeforce waived that contractual right in its final 2-3 weeks and opted to release the Cesar Gracie fighter altogether before the period expired.

Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker confirmed to Sherdog.com that the promotion informed Jack Shields, the fighter’s manager and father, of the release on Wednesday. Coker would not comment further on the decision.

“In the conversation we had today, they said they felt that Jake was leaning towards the UFC. Honestly, we were talking to them with an open mind, though Jake wants to fight the best,” said the elder Shields. “Between Strikeforce and EliteXC, Jake had the chance to fight on Showtime and CBS four or five times against some top fighters like Dan Henderson and Robbie Lawler. Strikeforce gave him great opportunities and exposure. They’ve been nothing but great for Jake.”

Shields, who successfully defended his title against former Pride Fighting Championships champion and UFC middleweight Henderson on April 17 in Nashville, Tenn., opted to not negotiate a renewal contract with Strikeforce prior to the bout. The fighter’s contract, which was originally drawn up by Pro Elite and purchased by Strikeforce after the short-lived fight organization went bankrupt in October 2008, also did not contain a standard “champion’s clause,” which could have placed stipulations on Shields’ renegotiations while he remained a titleholder.

Prior to news of the release, Jack Shields told Sherdog.com that he submitted the fighter’s asking price to the UFC on Wednesday and was awaiting an initial bid from the rival promotion to pass onto Strikeforce for review. The elder Shields said he submitted figures for a series of bouts he thought requisite if his son fought the top contenders in both the UFC’s welterweight and middleweight divisions.

Shields said his son would like to debut as a UFC middleweight, possibly against champion Anderson Silva, as welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre will be tied up with “The Ultimate Fighter” reality TV series and a pending bout with rival coach Josh Koscheck later this year.

“We didn’t come to agreement with Strikeforce, but Jake’s excited to challenge himself against the likes of Anderson Silva and others in the UFC,” said Shields.

In recent weeks, Strikeforce’s Coker had said the promotion had initial plans to hold a four-, eight-, or even 16-man tournament to crown a new champion if Shields vacated.

    ________________________

Well Dana has put one over Strikeforce it seems, we all knew Jake was heading to UFC, it was just a matter of time of when his deal with SF runs out.

So, who do you think they will match Shields up with first? I dont think he will get a title shot straight away.

Maybe Shields can fight the winner of Alves-Fitch for #1 contender, although if Fitch wins many will say he deserves the shot now.

I think he should come in as a WW and then if successful, move up to MW,though I've read that Sheilds dad says that jake would like 2 fights at MW and then drop to WW(a bit backwards if you ask me)
but either way,I'm hopefully looking forward to his debut in either division.

with the exception of an old Hendo,Lawler and Mayhem are not good MW's and would get eaten alive in the UFC MW division and I honestly don't think Jake will be successful in the UFC's MW division, where as in the WW division,I can see him doing well and really adding to an already stacked division. He could be a serious threat to GSP.

Most of the UFC MW's are naturally 200+lbs and cut to make weight where as Sheilds would be tiny in comparison since hes had to bulk up to make the MW division.
His wrestling and jits are spot on but against some of these huge guys, who are very unlikely to gas out,he might struggle and it's not as if he can get himself out of trouble with his powder puff punches, where as at WW,he'll be one of the big guys and shouldn't have a problem to out muscle and wrestling most.

Though I have to admit, the thought of Sheilds against Fitch doesn't exactly fill me full of excitment Rolling Eyes

    Sonnen's Bitch Nate? No chance...

Shields is a better Grappler than Sonnen. Unless Nates game has evolved since then Jake would give him 15mins of sweaty man love on the ground. Laughing

jimmyboy, i was on your side of this argument, but to claim Bisping as Hendos biggest win is, as Anfield would say, 'comical'.

Of course. UFC 100 was the biggest card of all time. Hendo had an emphatic knockout of a top five middleweight and was in line for another shot at Silva.

Bisping was a top five middleweight? Maybe in Cage Rage, but certainly not top five in the UFC, not even top 10 at the time of the Hendo fight.

Bisping was 17-1, definately top ten, arguably top five. The exposure and rivalry on The Ultimate Fighter, the chance to become an 'American hero' and the size of the event makes it Dan's biggest fight.

Laughable opinion. 17-1, with wins against who that actually warranted a top ten ranking?

Maby in cage rage! Laughing Laughing

Jimmyboy are you serious? Dan Henderson KO'd Wanderlei he and became a 2 weight champ id say that was maby a bigger win... just by a bit though.

Bigger win, A non ranked guy (anywhere not just us on here) who was gifted a win over Hamill? or setting a still unequaled record and became a 2 weight champ?

I do agree Hendo was close to number 2 when he lost to Shields thought, I think we had him in at 3 or worst 4th.

Bisping has never even been top 15! Jimmy, go back to Sherdog!

Hamill, Leben, Day, McCarthy, Sinosic and Pointon

Hamill beat Bisping but Hamill has never been top 15.
Leben is a brawler who is currently top 15(i think??) for the first time in his career.
    Day is a can
    McCarthy is a can
    Sinosic is an old can
Pointon isn't even good enough to be a can!

A win over Bisping the biggest in Hendo's career. Fucking hilarious stuff!

Hendo's win against better fighters than The Cunt:
    Carlos Newton
    Gilbert Yvel
    Big Nog
    Babalu
    Bustamante x2
    Ninja Rua
    Vitor Belfort
    Wanderlei Silva
    Rousimar Palhares
    Rich Franklin

Could make a case for Misaki as well. His win in the return over Hendo is a bigger and better win that anything Bitchping has done.

are you trying to wind people up?

if so, that's not appreciated. I know you are a big Bisping fan....but Leben is the only decent win on there, and going in he was 2-2 against notoriously glass jawed Alessio Sakara and Terry Martin being his only wins, he also had recently been beaten by Kalib Starnes (is he a top 5 mw to?) and Jason McDonald (ben you forgot to put mcdonald on the rankings).

Hamill was a robbery and it was at 205 anyway.

Day lost his last fight at Aggression MMA and is not at all relevant to the MW division.

Charles McCarthy had an entire career not beating a single decent fighter....what makes him relevant to rankings?

Sinosic was 8-9 when he fought Bisping, and then went on to lost to Paul "boom boom" Cahoon Neutral (another one ben accidentally left out of the top 5)

Ross Pointon is a 6-10 welterweight. thats all i got to say about that.

    he was fed poor fighters.

    Laughing Laughing

    Some comical statements!

Bisping the biggest win of Hendo's career Laughing

Hamill, Leben, Day, McCarthy, Sinosic and Pointon. All good wins. Robbed against Rashad

Hammil- Ye this is often considered to be one of the biggest robberies in recent memories, Hammil won all three rounds. This fights was probably fixed.

Leben-Always been very inconsistant and he is was half way through the worst run in his career. Even then Leben had Bitchping in a lot more trouble than Bisping ever did.

    Day-can

    McCarty-can

    Sinosic-can

Pointon- As Anfield said, he isn't even good enough to be a can Laughing aside from the fact he is really a natural WW, he is pure shit. A joke of a fighter, often considered to be amongst the worst fighters in the world today. I'd love to know in what world POINTON is a good win.

There's one thing being biased, trust me I know but there is another being delusional.
If its just a wind up, fair enough but if you really beleive this you might want to consider learning a little bit more about MMA.

    Anyway to the original argument.

    1.Anderson Silva
    2.Sonnen
    3.Shields
    4.Belfort
    5.Nate
    6.Hendo
