    Takedown/submissions Empty Takedown/submissions

Post  poz Tue Nov 17, 2009 9:59 pm

    Hi guys,
Firstly, this is the first time I have ever posted on any forum, so if I miss some ettiquette out, try and be kind!
Brief background, I watched the first few UFC's on VHS and although I enjoyed them, some styles were so poor (Mr Ettisch and Zimmerman(?)) spring to mind that I didn't enjoy the brutality, as I saw it then.
As a break from how shite THFC were on the 606 website I started reading the martial arts pages, and thanks to various members, who all seem to be here now, I got to enjoy watching fighting again, as now most fighters have at least an idea how to combat different styles (rather than just getting battered!)
Sorry I'm rambling! Someone (I think RBB) suggested looking up the the Pride trilogy as somewhere to start, when I watched the first part about 40 mins in a japanese guy who's name escapes me dives leg first at his opponent (Silva?), takes him down and subs him in one move!
Finally my question!!! Is that a lucky fluke, or are takedown submissions a legitimate move? If so, any pointers to their names, or the people who are good at them so I can look some up?
    Thanks and be gently....

Welcome mate... Watching old Pride events will probabally make you popular on here! Good man!

The Sub you mean was Ryo Chonan I think, Like a flying Scissors into a heel hook on Anderson Silva. Crazy to think were there careers are now in comparison.

Takedown Subs or Flying subs are rare because they are Risky and very hard to pull off.. Ive seen a few Flying Armbars in my time. Ill try to tink of a few takedowns into Subbs... Ive seen Aoki try a few im sure he has pulled one off...

Oh just saw Moose beat me to the Video of the Chonan fight!

certainly no fluke, but still a rare and highly skilled move (in fact i have never seen that exact move apart from that one time) but rolling kneebars and flying armbars and triangles which are initiated on the feet have been seen more often (still very rare).

There is no better fighter at sliding leg locks than Masakazu Imanari:

Imanari also had a great flying (sort of) armbar in Cage Rage:

And Sakuraba beat Shannon Rich via awesome single-leg transitioned into an achilles lock:

Sakuraba's spinning kimura on Renzo Gracie is a thing of beauty and a takedown/submission so relevant to this thread.

Flying scissor sweep you sometimes see in Judo, and he finished off with a heel hook.

Silva allegedly had a busted up foot for that fight, but that shouldn't take away how great that submission was.
