Well-known Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu expert Renzo Gracie could be the latest member of the legendary Gracie family to grace the Octagon.
UFC co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta hinted on his official twitter account that the promotion is in negotiations to acquire Renzo Gracie's services.
When a fan tweeted a request to Fertitta saying, "bring Renzo to the octagon asap!!!", the UFC co-owner replied, "We are workin on it!"
Speculation on Gracie's possible UFC signing began to pick up steam after company President Dana White posted on a picture of the two of them together at Abu Dhabi on his official twitter account.
Fertitta then tweeted, "Here in abu dhabi with renzo gracie. Do you want him to fight in the ufc?"
Gracie hasn't fought since being awarded a disqualification win against Frank Shamrock at EliteXC: "Destiny" in February 2007. The win was his third straight, with previous wins over Pat Miletich and Carlos Newton.
Gracie has competed for other notable promotions during his long career such as Pride, IFL, MARS and Rings. He has put together a 13-6-1 MMA record since turning pro in January 1992. Gracie has finished nine of his 13 career wins including seven coming by submission and holds other notable career wins over the likes of Maurice Smith, Sanae Kikuta and Oleg Taktarov.
He is a 5th degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and the head instructor at the Renzo Gracie Academy in Manhattan. Many well known BJJ and MMA fighters have been trained by Renzo, including brazilian jiu-jitsu black belts Rodrigo Gracie, current UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, former UFC welterweight champion Matt Serra and current UFC welterweight Ricardo Almeida.
If Gracie indeed signs with the UFC, a fight that makes a lot of sense could be one against former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes. Hughes defeated Renzo's first cousin, Royce Gracie, at UFC 60 in May 2006.
Another Gracie also recently signed with the UFC as reported here last month, Renzo's cousin, Rolles Gracie Jr., added his services to the organization and will debut against Mustapha Al-Turk at UFC 109 in February.
