http://www.cagepotato.com/chael-sonnen-pleads-guilty-money-laundering-faces-20-years-jail-and-500000-fineJust three days into 2011 and the year is already turning out to be much worse than the last for Chael Sonnen.
The suspended UFC middleweight who is also a licensed realtor in West Linn, Oregon pled guilty of money laundering Monday in federal court.
According to the Lake Oswego Review, a U.S. Department of Justice press release sent out today states that that Sonnen "conducted a financial transaction designed to hide or disguise the ownership and control of proceeds of mortgage fraud."
You might recall that Sonnen bowed out of the race for Oregon senate house seat in June because of "a legal matter that demanded attention," -- the same legal matter that Chael told HDNet's Mike Straka that he was too busy with to deal with preparations for his CSAC hearing in December himself. Now we can understand why it took precedence over having his fighting license reinstated.
Money laundering in the U.S. carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison as well as a $500,000 fine.
His sentencing is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. March 28, which explains why he stated during his MMA Live appearance last week that he wants to fight as soon as he can when his suspension is up on March 1. He'll likely need the money.

http://mmajunkie.com/news/21966/despite-legal-issues-sonnen-vs-akiyama-in-the-works-for-ufc-128.mmaIt's unknown whether a potential prison sentence will torpedo the middleweight bout's possibility as representatives from the UFC could not be reached at the time of this writing. However, The Oregonian is reporting Sonnen has reached a plea deal with the District Attorney that will result in a two-year probation, along with a $10,000 fine and the revocation of his realtor license.

Blown way out of proportion. Minor violation. $10,000 fine is nothing.
Sonnen vs Akiyama?? Are the UFC looking to cut Akiyama??

UFC Suspends Chael Sonnen Following Guilty Plea to Mortgage Fraud
Chael Sonnen's fall from grace continues. Yesterday, reports surfaced that Sonnen plead guilty to mortgage fraud that he committed in 1996. While it appears he will escape without jail time, it looks like the UFC won't be so lenient. TMZ Sports reports:
UFC president Dana White tells us Sonnen's contract has been temporarily "frozen."
But White isn't turning his back on one of his most famous fighters -- Dana tells us, "Chael Sonnen has gone through a lot in the last few months and we think it's important for him to focus on getting his personal life together before focusing on his career in the UFC."
White adds, "I spoke with Chael earlier today and he agrees that setting priorities in his life is the best thing for him right now. I sincerely hope Chael is able to straighten out his personal life."

It'll make absolutely no difference. His contract is for fights, not time so "freezing" it means nothing. So he'll be back on the same schedule he would have been anyway.

Sonnen is a terrible ambassador for the sport. He's a racist, drug cheating liar who only got a shot at Silva due to the attention he got when he started mouthing off. His submission defence is terrible. How many times can one guy get submitted and not learn? The UFC should wash their hands with him and let him go fight in the minor leagues, that might get his head out his arse.

He beat Yushin Okami and Nate Marquadt in back to back fights. Two bigger wins that your boyfriend will ever have. That's why he got a title shot. Then he put a beating on Anderson Silva. Submission defense is the only weakpoint in his game. There are not many fighters out there can point to having only one weakness.
