Michael Bisping Interview Empty Michael Bisping Interview

Post  KingFedor Thu Oct 15, 2009 6:27 pm

THE gladiators of the Ultimate Fighting Championship are heading for global conquest... and Manchester is next on their hit-list.

The mixed martial arts extravaganza will be coming to the MEN Arena again on November 14 - and the good news for fans is that Britain's biggest star Michael Bisping should be fit to compete.

The Clitheroe kid suffered a setback to his hopes of a world title shot when he suffered a horrific knockout by legend Dan Henderson at the UFC's milestone 100th tournament in Las Vegas.

There were fears that he would have to serve a 90-day suspension from all contact, which would have left insufficient time for Bisping to prepare for UFC 105, in Manchester.

But after a CAT scan revealed no serious damage, Bisping escaped with a 45-day suspension - and now he is desperate to get back in the Octagon.

    Streak

"I am gonna kick someone's backside in Manchester in front of my hometown crowd, then fight again as soon as possible and then rematch with Henderson," said Bisping.

"That wasn't the best of me in the ring in Vegas and I want another crack at him.

"I want a top fighter in Manchester, I want to get back up there straight away. That's what I have told the UFC.

"I can't wait to fight in Manchester again, it will be good to fight in front of my own supporters again."

Bisping is seen as a standard-bearer for the UFC's plans to conquer the UK market, although that does not mean a diet of no-hopers and bums, which is often the case with rising boxing stars.

Fighters who hit a losing streak are often dropped from the UFC's roster, unless they are crowd-pleasers.

That is one reason mixed martial arts has already overtaken both boxing and professional wrestling in popularity in the US, and now has mainstream sports like American football and baseball in its sights.

    Ruthless

But the men who run the UFC, who combine ruthless business acumen with missionary zeal, don't intend to stop there.

They want UFC to be a worldwide phenomenon, and Mexico and the UK are highest priorities now the US is already capitulating to their wiles.

The organisation already has a London office, and last week in Vegas they flew a phalanx of British journalists out to Vegas to cover the event.

The next four tournaments are in Philadelphia, Portland, Dallas and Los Angeles.

But significantly, UFC 105 will be held in Manchester, and will feature some of the ten British professionals.

The organisers plan to smash the Arena's box office records for a sporting event, after attracting a crowd of over 15,000 when they last appeared at the MEN Arena in 2007.

Only Ricky Hatton and Mike Tyson have chalked up bigger sporting crowds in the Arena's history, but this time UFC plans to plant its flag firmly on European soil.

UFC are fully aware that Manchester has become the UK's fight capital in the last ten years, led by Ricky Hatton's exploits and backed up by a host of top boxing events at the Arena featuring names such as Mike Tyson, Thomas Hearns, Chris Eubank, Naseem Hamed and Joe Calzaghe.

But boxing is bogged down by too many uncompetitive fights, too many weight divisions and alphabet titles, and flimsy promotion, is already struggling to keep up.

    Perfect

The action of mixed martial arts itself intends to combine the best facets of various martial arts from around the world. The perfect MMA exponent would possibly have the knockout power of a boxer, the balletic poise of a kickboxer, the strength of a Greco-Roman wrestler, the technique of a ju-jitsu or judo player, and the ferocity of a street fighter.

Put them together in the octagon, and you have a spectacle which veers between breathtakingly brilliant and frighteningly brutal.

Three of the first four bouts at UFC 100 were ended by a "guillotine choke", in which the loser is caught in a headlock and then has the blood supply to his brain momentarily cut off by pressure on the carotid artery, sending him into temporary unconsciousness.

It sounds appallingly savage, but the fighters themselves appear non-plussed by the fuss.

The lightweight clash between Mac Danzig and Jim Miller turned into a blood-bath, almost literally.

An elbow to the head early in the fight opened a large gash on Danzig's forehead, an injury which would have brought an instant end to any boxing bout.

But UFC fights do not end on cuts, and Danzig fought on, his tactic seemingly to drown his opponent in his own blood.

He lost, and Miller later spoke of how tough it was to grapple with Danzig due to both men being slippery with the spilled claret.

This is not a sport for the faint of heart or the weak of stomach.

Bisping suffered a crushing knockout from UFC legend Henderson and, as he lay prone on the canvas, was smashed in the face again by the plummeting American before the referee could leap in to end the contest.

    Risks

For a few minutes, the situation looked extremely serious as doctors and paramedics tended to the British fighter.

Henderson cavorted around the ring, milking the adulation, and the crowds exulted every time replays of the devastating finish were shown on the six big screens around the arena.

That KO looked like being a serious blow to the UFC's plans for Manchester, but they are willing to take such risks - something which sets them aside from boxing.

To put your main British star in against a man of Henderson's ability and ferocity just four months ahead of a major British show would be seen as ludicrously risky in boxing.

In UFC, it is par for the course. They believe in throwing their top men together at every opportunity.

Only two of the 22 fighters in action last weekend had a zero in their losses column, and of their five world champions, only one is undefeated.

Now the show rolls on, across the US - where it has gone from a taboo freak show to a mainstream sport attracting sponsors such as Budweiser and Harley Davidson - and now to Britain - Manchester you have been warned.

    What a dickhead!

"I want a top fighter, that's what i've told the UFC".

Yeah, but surprisingly you got Denis Can, i mean Kang!

He wants a rematch with Henderson?? Firstly, do you have a death wish?? Secondly, Hendo is a top level fighter, Bisping at his best is at least 2 levels below him. He's got no business ever getting back in a cage with Hendo and i'd put money that he never will.

Didn't see the best of him?? Well for me, that was the best Michael Bisping fight i've ever seen.

I hope Kang batters him. Then maybe Dana will admit that he's an average fighter who was protected for years.

Will the real Denis Kang please stand up and smash this prick!

Amazingly though, he's not the biggest prick in the article, whoever wrote it needs a good slap. Claiming Bisping wasn't fed no-hopers and then slagging off Hendo for celebrating the win? Go back to cricket you mincey cunt.

Kang is no can, he is a good fight for Bisping, around the same level as him. In fact i think its quite a dangerous fight for a guy who is coming off a very very brutal knockout.

but the guy writing this is a peen.

Mate, people here loathe Bisping with all their might. Whilst i am not a fan of his, i do find him entertaining to watch.

lol I was only joking! i wouldn't write this shit. The guys clueless and evidently has very very limited knowledge of UFC. His first UFC was probably 100! in fact I'm almost positive it was.

Michael Bisping definitely polarises the MMA community which is why I think he's good for the sport. While people might hate him, he's controversial and arrogant. I think he would be a loss to UFC if he went, which is probably why Dana keeps giving him these type of fights. The UFC needs characters like him. That's just my opinion.

The Denis Kang who fought in Japan and Korea was no can. The UFC version is.
