Neil Grove and Cole Konrad both won spots in the final of Bellator Fighting Championships' heavyweight tournament at the expense of an Eastern European fighter.
Konrad and Grove defeated Alexey Oleinik and Damian Grabowski on Thursday at Bellator 29 in Milwaukee, Wis. They will meet later this year to crown Bellator's inaugural heavyweight champion.
Grove took only 45 seconds to knockout Oleinik. A right kick from Grove (10-2-1) aimed at the body caught Oleinik in the head just as he was ducking and changing levels. Oleinik (28-6-1) fell to the mat and tried to buy time with a takedown, but Grove simply unloaded punches until referee Jason Herzog halted the action.
Oleinik looked unhappy about the stoppage, but he was doing little to defend himself from the barrage of hammerfists and punches other than clinging to Grove's leg.
"My job is to finish the fight quite quickly," Grove said. "It wasn't hard to be honest. I think my kick, my knee must have connected with his head at the same time. I knew that he was going to try and clinch, and when he did, I was just kept whacking him."
Konrad (6-0) followed the wrestling formula that has won him yet another onesided,UD,he did look better though, and as was attempting to try things from top,but he just doesn't have any of those skills in his arsenal yet.
He set the tone early by powering through Grabowski (13-1) with a double-leg takedown less than 15 seconds into their bout and spending the rest of the round in top position on the mat.
Most of the next 14 minutes followed the same pattern, alleviated only by occasional stand-ups from Herzog and once by Grabowski's escape to his feet in the third round.
Konrad's ground-and-pound offense opened a cut near Grabowski's right eye. The eventual winner also attempted a kimura in the second round, but otherwise did not come close to finishing Grabowski before the final horn.
The last four fights have been decisions for Konrad, a two-time NCAA Division I wrestling national champion at 285 pounds.
