Satoru Kitaoka vs. Kuniyoshi Hironaka headline 10/3 “Pancrase 2010 Passion Tour 9″ event in Tokyo, Japan.
If you don’t follow Japanese MMA, you’re missing out as a fight fan. This weekend, Pancrase will hold Passion Tour 9, an 11-bout card featuring a main event lightweight showdown between former Sengoku lightweight champion Satoru Kitaoka (pictured), and UFC/DREAM/Cage Force veteran Kuniyoshi Hironaka. Kitaoka, who obtained some serious momentum with his dominant run through Sengoku’s first ever lightweight grand prix last year, which eventually saw him claim their vacant lightweight title with a first-round submission victory over Takanori Gomi, has recently suffered some serious setbacks that have pushed him off the MMA radar. A fourth round TKO loss to Mizuto Hirota at “Sengoku: Ninth Battle” as well as a first round knockout loss to Jorge Masvidal at “Sengoku: Eleventh Battle” not only saw Kitaoka lose his coveted lightweight strap, but also a temporary removal from Sengoku Raiden Championships – one of Japan’s premiere fight organizations. Kitaoka has since found his way back to the win column with a decision victory over Jorge Rodrigues at Passion Tour 5. A victory over the highly-regarded Hironaka might be his chance at stepping back up into Sengoku Raiden Championships and working his way back to the lightweight belt he so desperately wants to wear again.
Kuniyoshi Hironaka, a four-time UFC veteran, is also looking to get back into the top fight promotions in Japan. Following his dismissal from the UFC after a TKO loss to Jonathan Goulet, Hironaka went 5-1 before his most recent setback – a first round knockout loss to the crafty liver-killer Katsunori Kikuno at DREAM.13 this past March. Hironaka seems to always buckle in high-profile fights, and although this clash with Kitaoka isn’t going to be airing on pay-per-view, it’s going to be one of his toughest fights to date.
Both fighters are dangerous with submissions, however Kitaoka definitely has the edge when it comes to the ground game. Standing however, is probably going to be in favor of Hironaka, and he should seek to keep the fight on the feet and avoid those lethal leg submissions that Kitaoka possesses.
The full fight card for “Pancrase: Passion Tour Nine”, can be seen below. Unlike DREAM and Sengoku, this event will not be airing on HDNet, but if you’re interested, check here come fight time and you should be able to catch the live event.
