Well guys, tomorrow its time for one of my favourite fighters to retire for good.

One of the most likeable, popular and exciting fighters in MMA, Hidehiko Yoshida will fight his long time student Kazuhiro Nakamura in his 18th MMA fight, but that on top of over 1000 judo fights where he won Asian, World and Olympic gold medals.

thats a hell of a career.

He made his PRIDE debut in 2002 where he choked Royce Gracie unconscious in a grappling match.

he holds submission victories over a prime Don Frye, Masaaki Satake, Kiyoshi Tamura, a prime Mark Hunt, Tank Abbott, Naoya Ogawa, Yosuke Nishijima and Maurice Smith.

perhaps the most memorable moments of his career:

    3. Overcoming huge odds to win a convincing decision over the man many had hyped to be the next japanese mma star, Yoshida version 2, the reigning olympic judo champion Satoshi Ishii on new year eve.

    2. His 2 wars with Wanderlei Silva, they have blurred together for me but they are both trememndous fights and very close, one was a split decision. look them up if you havent seen them.

    1. In the most watched fight in PRIDE FC history (NYE 05), on top of the most stacked card in mma history, he shed the gi to take on his bitter rival from his Judo playing days, Olympic silver medallist Naoya Ogawa.
Despite giving up size, he won with an impressive armbar.

he never ducked a fight including Barnett and Crocop.

and huge respect for him for wearing his gi, and starting an mma gym for judo players.

Unlike how I pointed out before, where many people in the press and on the internet were simply ignoring Yoshida's farewell, the day after in Japan it is front page news. Of course that brings out a whole different range of questions and probabilities. The long short of things is even if the press didn't promote the show, they knew it was a big deal after the fact. Much as the tradition is for a fighter heading into his retirement, Hidehiko Yoshida went out in a tearful manner, being soundly defeated by the much younger Kazuhiro Nakamura. Yoshida actually came into the fight heavier than he had fought before, as throughout most of his career he stuck around the 225 range, but this time came in pushing 250 and looking like he wasn't exactly in the greatest shape.

The fight resembled the Satoshi Ishii bout, meaning that Yoshida chose to stand up most of the fight, with minimal judo grips or even attempts at throws, although Yoshida chose to go out in style with his Judo gi. I'm sure the question will eventually be asked of what this does for Nakamura's career, and the short answer is nothing. Defeating Yoshida does not make careers, as Yoshida retires at a rather unimpressive 9-8, with losses to fighters like James Thompson (whose ear was exploded on CBS by Kimbo) and Sanae Kikuta who hasn't fought since. If anything, this can be a turning point for Nakamura who has not seen a win since Sengoku 6 back in November of 2008, hopefully he can continue to win after this bout.

Micah Miller's second advance on Japan proved to be yet another failure, as probably the man with the biggest future in this whole ASTRA event, Michihiro Omigawa took the fight to him and was able to outwork him for three rounds. The highlight as always, is his colorful post-fight speech, where he once again called himself a bastard for not finishing his opponent and being undeserving of fans. Enson Inoue made his return to the ring after a six year absence to honor Yoshida and easily dispatched New Zealand kickboxer Antz Nansen in the first round with an armbar.

Ryo Chonan's night didn't end as well for him, sadly, as Korean Jung Hwan Cha was able to knock him out in the second rounds. Cha mentioned that he was a big fan of watching Chonan fight in PRIDE and has done some training with the Yoshida Dojo, it was a honor to fight on the card and shocking to be able to fight and defeat Ryo Chonan.

from what i read on the play by play it was a very emotional affair at the nippon budokan (where all the major judo events are held in japan) and Yoshida broke down in tears when his parents came to the ring after the fight.

Guest appearances at the event were from the man himself, Fedor Emelianenko who said:

I always love coming to Japan, so I’m very happy to be back. I heard that Yoshida was retiring so I decided to come here to cheer for him. I love Japan, and hope to come back here and have another fight. Thank you for remembering me and being fans of me.

Wanderlei Silva said that he respected Yoshida for their fights or words to that effect, and that they should hit the casinos together next time he is in vegas.

Sakuraba also made a speech, and a bunch of other japanese fighters were there such as Funkai, Minowaman etc. plus some judo dignitaries.

Yoshida said he will be returning to te Judo community and Nakamura is taking over Yoshida dojo.

It seemed like a great occasion, i hope we can get links for his fight and ceromony.

Its a shame he finished of with loss, i will always remember him in association with his fight against Wandi. And choking out Royce

He seems to be very well respected and appreciated by his peers.

    thats true.

i think perhaps if Masato wasn't retiring on that night, the Ishii fight could have been his swansong, i dont think he trained as hard for this fight....

252lbs!!! for a guy who won gold at like...171 lbs. lol

also apparently there was a hint of Yoshida holding back.

apparently he tools nakamura in grappling...then Nakamura nearly armbars him?

anyway this was fitting because it was the scene of so many of his judo victories.

    on the other fights:

glad to see on of my favourites "boots and burns" Daisuke Nakamura get a win in a big rivalry fight (he said as a UWFi wrestler would die before losing to someone of the "shooto style" whatever that means!)

a big win for Omigawa...and apparently not a robbery! (for once in his career)

Chonan said before the fight he was injured and just did it out of friendship for Yoshida (he had "we <3 Hidehiko" written on his head) unfortunatley he was put to sleep!! big upset.

on the sh**dog play by play they said kotani should have won vs Masvidal.

also Mills seems determined not to live up to his potential!

I was wondering about that Chonan result.....

I want to see the fights because i have never seen a 30-29 or 30-30 fight Shocked Laughing

Crazy stuff, i dont think 10 point must system really works for MMA.

Yeah i really thought Yoshida would own Nakamura, maybe he was taking it easy or emotions got the better of him on the occasion.

Nice post Chesty cheers for the Pics, the Inoue fight is up somewhere. I agree its a real shame for Yoshida to have gone out on a loss and preatty much un noticed by western press. I really admire the guy from his wars with Wanderlei Silva. He was a real fight anyone anywhere type of fighter, he took some seriously tought fights from the start to the end of his career and chalked up some great wins, sad way to go out on a loss like that but I think it was his time to retire, glad he got the support of Fedor and Saku, that was really cool to see.

Ill keep an eye out for other Videos, really want to see his final fight.

Yoshida was a good fighter but IMO shows a lot what is wrong with Japan. You yourself said that he was probably a 170 fighter, yet for some absurd reason he ends up fighting JOSH BARNETT! A solid 255 + fighter who is one of the best grapplers in MMA history. That is absolutely terrible, why in the blue hell would that fight be set up? He didn't even look that much bigger than Royce in there fight.

I have to say he feels like a waste of potentiol..In MMA. n Judo, obviously he was outstanding but in MMA he never reached the potentiol he could have. I know you love Japan but Yoshida would have had a much better career in the US because he wouldn't have to fight guys who are litterly twice the size of him. Most of his losses are acceptable but he did lose to James Thompson, a guy who he shouldn't have been fighting in the first place. But 9-8 isn't quite a career where a fighter has reached his potentiol.

Unfortuante to see him go out on a loss, hopefully Nakamura can actually build some mommentum after this and rack up a few big wins. Nakamura is someone who I like and I feel is pretty underated.

Pissed off to hear Chonan got KOed, he might be nearing the end of his career now.

Dissapointed to see Omigawa beat Miller, I don't like Omigawa's style and because he wins so many fights he should lose.

Nice to see Masdival win but I hear was far from impressive and could have lost. Don't think it was a robbery though.

I though Mills could have had quite a career in Japan, but dissapointing to hear he lost again.
