Post  Moose Stuff For Money... Mon Mar 08, 2010 11:47 pm

A couple of encouraging points from Toney, he's talking with a bit more respect for MMA now, however he still seems to think he'll be impervious to a takedown...

James Toney insists that he's taking mixed martial arts seriously. But he also says boxing is still his top priority.

Toney, who signed with the UFC last week, told MMAFighting.com that he won't stop boxing and expects to step into the ring some time in the next couple of months before stepping into the Octagon this summer. But he compared himself to Bo Jackson, a two-sport athlete who described football as "a hobby" but was still one of the best running backs in the NFL.

"I'm still a boxer," Toney said. "Boxing is my No. 1 goal. ... This is something that's going to keep me invigorated. Unlike most boxing people, I'm a fan of MMA. Why not give it a chance?"

At the top of his game Toney, the 1991 and 2003 Ring Magazine Fighter of the Year, could fight every other month. He said he'd like to get back into fighting that frequently, alternating between his two sports.

"I'm going to go back and forth," Toney said. "I'm a two-sport guy. I'll fight in the UFC, then boxing, then another UFC fight, and then boxing. I'll do as much as I can, whatever fights I can get."

When I asked Toney whether it was realistic to think he could compete at a high level while switching between two different sports while giving himself only a couple months off between fights, he sounded surprised by the question.

"Why not?" Toney asked. "Bo Jackson played football and baseball and was at the top of his game."

That's true, but Jackson was in his 20s when he was playing both sports, and Jackson was one of the best conditioned athletes in the world. Toney is 41 and about 70 pounds heavier than he was at his peak, when he won the IBF middleweight championship at a chiseled 158 pounds. Toney said he weighs 225 pounds right now and wants to fight as a heavyweight in the UFC, although he said he'd be able to get down to 205 and fight at light heavyweight, and he insists that his ample gut doesn't make him out of shape.

"If I were out of shape I'd be getting knocked out and beat up real bad," Toney said. "I've had more than 80 pro fights and I've never been knocked out."

When I pointed out to Toney that the UFC has fighters who are world-class athletes in disciplines such as wrestling Brazilian jiu jitsu, he said he knew he'd never be as good on the ground as most UFC fighters, but that he could learn enough takedown defense to keep a fight from going to the ground. And he pointed out that no UFC fighter will ever be able to exchange punches with him.

"There are a lot of guys in the UFC who can take me down, but I'm learning how to defend the takedown," Toney said. "I'm not even worried about that. They've got to worry about that when they get in with me -- how are they going to take me down? They've got to take risks when they take me down. They're taking a risk that they're going to get knocked out. ... There ain't no one in the UFC that can go blow-to-blow with me. You know that."

Toney said he's been going over "basics" with trainer Juanito Ibarra but hasn't done any full-on MMA sparring yet.

"I've tried a little kickboxing and wrestling," Toney said. "It's all hand-to-hand combat."

Toney said he had offers on the table from other MMA promoters, including Strikeforce, but that he wanted to sign with the UFC because he wanted to test himself against the best opponents he could find. And when I asked Toney about those potential opponents, the one he sounded most interested in fighting was Randy Couture.

"Randy Couture is a legend," Toney said. "He's a great dude. If we fight I'd have to take my time and pick him apart. If that's my first fight, it'll be a huge fight."

Toney was dismissive of Kimbo Slice, saying Kimbo would be an easy opponent for him to beat and adding, "I'm not doing it to be in a sideshow." But Toney didn't rule out the possibility that Kimbo could be his first opponent. He said the only thing he knows for sure is that his first UFC fight will be this summer and will be on pay-per-view. And he said he's sure it's going to be big.

"I'm up for a challenge," Toney said. "I'm excited about it."

Respect to Toney in that he will genuinley fight whoever UFC put in front of him, and respect to the man for never being KO'd...

But he must have taken one too many punches to the head if he isnt sparring MMA and thinks you can still be one dimentional in this day and age of MMA. Guy is getting taken down and subbed by even the most average fighter especailly if he is stupid enough to fight at heavyweight.

    Freddie Roach's thoughts...
I think they're using James as a way to say MMA fighters are better than boxers. If he fights a quality ground guy, once he goes to the ground he's gonna get killed. But If a guy chooses to stand up with James, James is gonna destroy him. That’s why they call him “Lights Out”. I really don’t think there’s one fighter in MMA that could stand with James.

Toney wants Brock as his first fight Neutral

I can see him getting destroyed by any half decent MMA fighter from 185 pound upwards.

I think people are overlooking Toney TBH.

Don't get me wrong, he is a complete moron if he thinks he can beat Lesnar but I can see him beating some of the other good HWs around. Its safe to say he is a world-class boxer so he could outsrike any HW or LHW. He still brings an art into MMA and he is very good at it, the only problem is his age and physique. If a 20 year old MMA fighter came in with boxing and scored a quick KO, every gets on his back, Including me (see Todd Duffee) but because Toney is a really a boxer, people don't like it. Sylvia completely overlooked Mercer and look what happened there. His whole legacy was tarnished and has now become a complete joke.

If Toney fought Kimbo, what do you think would happen? I like and respect Kimbo but I could only see him getting KTFO in a matter of minutes.

Then take some one like Barry. Excellent striker, comical grappler. I really could see Toney lighting him up quite quickly as well. Same goes for other strikers like Hardonk, Choi, Kongo and Buentello.

Then you have someone like Struve and its a plain grappler vs striker match, and Struve's takedowns aren't the best. I could see some one like Nelson embarrasing him because he is such a talented grappler with good wrestling.

Is Toney ever going to big? Not at 41 years of age but he can potentiolly cause a few of the middle-level HWs some problems.

He deserves respect for wanting to fight the best like Lesnar, but if he wants to take this seriously he needs to get his head out of his ass and stop calling out guys like Lesnar. He would just embarass himself and could actually get really hurt. A 41 year old man can't take the punishmet that Frank Mir took.

    no way!

Toney has the absolute worst boxing stance for mma with his heavy front leg.
think about how much machida was susceptable to leg kicks against shogun, now think about how those kicks would have affected machida if..

instead of shogun (who isnt known for his leg kicks) it was a heavyweight kicking specialist such as barry, crocop, hardonk or even mcsweeny.

machida had never trained to take leg kicks.

machida was in his 40s and making his debut.

    machida was a natural welterweight.

maybe i am complicating it too much but there is no way Toney could take a heavy leg kick and keep firing at 100%.

toney trains to look out for 2 things, MMA fighters train to look out for 8! and thats just the striking.

at best he will KO kimbo or another can who wants to box with him. or just land a big punch very early.

I agree about the Leg kicks, There arent great Muay Thai Strikers in UFC's Hw devision but someone as Chesty said who has good Muay Thai and good Leg Kicks can eat him alive.... Toney isnt a massive puncher at heavyweight either, IF the man can check a kick he is going to get hurt. Someone will just skip into legkicks like Cruz against Bowles and land them hard. His Legs arent conditioned to take kicks.

I think a decent Kickboxer/Thaiboxer should beat him on the feet. Pure boxing is great dont get me wrong Im a huge Boxing fan. Infact I think 99% of MMA fighters could do with Boxing lessons but Toney needs to learn a lot quickly. Juanito isnt the best trainer for him, he didnt teach Ramapge to be well rounded.

And thats Just the feet, Mercer was a complete one off, To be honest Sylvia clearly underestimated him. He turned up looking like he hadnt trained at all, guy was badly out of shape and was probabally in there too relaxed. I also think Toney doesnt hit as hard as Mercer... I always Joked he had a pretty shit KO ratio for a guy called "Lights out"

I agree with the Kimbo prediction Red.... I think Kimbo vs Toney would be like a amature rolling session in the local guy with a guy who had been there a few months against a guy who had just turned up for his 1st class! Laughing Kimbo WOULD take him down, no way he tries to Box him. Then Kimbo uses his shit groundgame to win, It would be so amature looking Dana would regret putting in togeather! You can Imagine Kimbo thinking "Damn, how do you do a Kimura again"

    Laughing

Ye I do think Juanito is a fucking awful coach, remember what Griffin did to Rampage with leg kicks?

Thats something Toney can't just ignore completely, at least he said he has been training wrestling. I don't really think Kimbo has much of a chance, He absoltley GOT to take the fight to the ground. Kimbo standing will offer no problems and get fucked, he can't even kick well enough because of his knee. If Toney is smart he would easily be able to beat Kimbo.

Probably pushing it with Barry, his leg kicks are ruthless but his ground game looks so bad that his only option would be to stand. I do think someone like Tushcerer would be more likely to win because as soon as it hits the ground he is done.

Don't think McSweeney really offers anything, he was getting beat on the feet by fucking MATT MEATHEAD MITIRONE! If he tries to stand with Toney he would beat badly, I can see how Hardonk would beat him standing but no way McSweeney. He could possibly win by a submission but his ground game is on par with Kimbo. He is another guy who HAS to take it to the ground.

Does Mercer have more power? I don't really think Mercer was that good a boxer, the majority of the better fighters on his record beat him. Holmes, Holyfied, Lewis, and Wladmir Kiltishko. Toney is a much better boxer.

The things I really count against him is his ego, age and unwillingness to learn. The first and latter things kind of piss me off but I do think he will pick up a win or two if he fights the right guy. McSweeney would actually be a good first opponent.

HAHAHA they do make me laugh alot with some of their commments. I did mention about leg kicks earlier in the topic, I think the HW division lost one of its best muay thai guys to the LHW division in Vera, I just wanna see Toney fight now, and I'd also like to see him KTFO.... hes a really cock!

Former UFC light heavyweight champion, Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell spoke EXCLUSIVELY to MMABay this week about signing of heavyweight boxer, James “Light’s Out” Toney, admitting he doesn’t know what Dana White is thinking, before adding he’d love the opportunity to “play with” Toney himself down the line

“I don’t know (laughing). I’ll have to talk to Dana about what’s going on, I don’t know what he’s doing. He’s got something planned. Toney’s at least coming from a boxing background and it will be interesting to see how much MMA he did and who they match him up with. I’m just hoping if they bring him in he’s gonna come in running his mouth about MMA and MMA fighter being bad and I hope they put him against somebody good so they will crush him.”

Speaking about a possible fight between Toney and either Randy Couture or even himself, “The Iceman” said:

“James has got one shot at beating him and that’s catching him with a punch coming in. Once he gets tied up it’s over. I would love that fight. You would actually see me hit a double and put him on his head. You might actually see me get a submission in the UFC. I might play with him for a little bit and put him in an arm bar or something.”

Liddell’s fight with long time nemesis, Tito Ortiz was the subject of much speculation over the weekend although it now appears it will go down as expected on June 12th in Vancouver, Canada. As for Toney, there is no word on who he will square off with first inside the octagon with potential opponents, “Kimbo Slice” and Randy Couture already pencilled in for other plans

One thing that is for certain is that, Dana signing Toney has certainly caused a stir between Fans, fighters and media. Its already been a good decision imo. And even if Toney goes and gets embarassed in his first fight people would still be talking alot about it.

I think that will be down to him as I think the UFC will still offer him more fights.

How long is the contarct he signed?
    I think it's a four fight deal isn't it.

I don't know if he will get to fight all four but I'm sure they won't cut him after one fight if he loses.

Yeah Payne hit the nail on the head, they give Kimbo all sorts of chances and will do the same for Toney. People will pay to see him figth again. They can always say he is taking trainineg serious now etc.. and put him in a more winable fight. I dont think his career in MMA depends on this at all unless he doesnt want to fight anymore.

I feel bad for badmouthing Couture. I dont mind the guy but I think its a little disrespectfull to fighers like Rampage. If Rampage beat Evans, You only have to look at his list of recent wins and they far outweight Randys, Randy should know this. But I suppose you cant hold it against him, everyone wants a title shot!! and Couture vs Shogun is a fight Id want to see as a Shogun fan.

Aparently Shoguns manager said Couture is looking like the next challenger....

Unlucky Rampage or Evans I guess!!! Lets hope Lil Nog gets the win at 114 at least because him vs the winner of that is a fight im sure everyone wasnts to see.

They shouldnt have given him Randy for his first fight, that is just too bad a match up for Toney. I guess there planning on making an example out of Toney and boxing.

A fight against a lower ranked fighter with not much of ground game would have the choice, not a 5 time UFC champion who top 10 and is Div 1 champion and an olympic alternate greco roman wrestler.
