Vitor Belfort (19- vs Demian Maia (11-1)

In an exciting fight between two Brazillian MWs, the hard hitting former UFC champion, and number one contender to the MW title, Vitor Belfort takes on BJJ wizard Demian Maia.

Both fighters have black belts in BJJ, however Maia is clearly superior on the ground as a second degree. Belfort is also a black belt in judo and a blue belt in karate, but his real strength lies in his boxing which has led him to amass 13 KO/TKOs including opponents such as Franklin, Lindland and Wandy.

Despite both fighters being reasonably well-rounded this is a clear clash of styles, a grappler vs striker match. Vote away.

Im a Maia fan, I love him Subs he is one of the most exciting groundfighter in MMA to watch, thing is Belfort is a 225lbs Animal he is going to be too hard to takedown and too eplosive for Maia who hasnt much standup or a chin good enough to take the sort of flurrys Belfort would dish out in the opening seconds.

I think we will see this fight in 2010, when Anderson beats Belfort, they will want a big win for Belfort to bounce back from.

Unless we get a sudden influx of Maia fanboys I think this fight can be called already.

The 12th fight of the Open weight tourtument is about to get underway as Vitor Belfort takes on Demain Maia!

Dan Mirgiliota is the ref for this one and he bring the fighters in to read the instructions. He pokes Maia in the eye but he seems ok. Both fighters show a lot of respect for each other and bow heads. We are just about ready to start.

The round starts and Belfort comes out quickly, Maia backs away but Belfort stalking him. Standing south paw stance, Maia gets a kick in. Maia shoots for a takedown but Belfort catches him with A HUGE UPPERCUT, Maia is down and Belfort pounces and hits him with another huge punch, two more shots and the reffere finally stops it, Maia took way too punishment there. After the fight, Wandy who was cornering Maia is visibly upset and confront Belfort. Randy Couture who was cornering Belfort breaks them up but Maia is still out, very late stoppage from Mirgilotta. Maia is stretchered out of the ring, that KO was brutal.

Belfort doesn't celebrate his win, he apologises to Maia for the extra punishment but says he was just doing his job.
