Tonight's Shine Fights "Worlds Collide: Mayorga vs Thomas" weigh-ins from Big Apple Restaurant & Sports Pub in Fayetteville, NC kicked off what is to be a great pay-per-view event. The event was emceed by Karen Bryant of MMA Heat, and was observed by Ron Foster and Shine CEO Dorian Price. All fighters made weight for their bouts with a few fighters having to be draped off so they could finish their cuts.
The first fighter on the scale was Roger Carrol, a Hickory (8-2), NC native, doing his best to impersonate Chuck Liddell. He'll be taking on Brazil's Paulo Souza (7-3) in a middleweight match up. Carroll weighed in at 183.8 pounds while Souza came in at 185.8.
Next on the scale was Mario "Serious" Stapel (16-12). He weighed in at 149 pounds. His opponent, IFL veteran, Zac George (19-3) tipped the scale at 150 pounds.
The first bout of drama came in the next match ups. Luiz "The Joker" Azeredo [12-8], who once defeated Anderson Silva, weighed in fine at 152.8 pounds. He will be facing the eccentric (22-16-2)Charles "Kid Khaos" Bennett. When the emcee announced Bennett, all heads turned toward the door, but no Bennett. After several calls, Bennett finally showed to get on the scales. He weighed in at 155.8 pounds
Next up was Braulio Estima, making his MMA debut, he will be facing Judo expert Rick Hawn (5-0) in a catchweight bout. Estima weighed in at 179.4 lbs, while Hawn weighed 175.2.
One of the experts most anticipated bouts, Alexandre "Cacareco" Ferreira (18-6) vs. Jamal "The Suit" Patterson (5-2) was next to get on the scales. Ferreira, who has won seven consecutive bouts by first round submission, weighted in just under the 205 pound limit (204.2 lbs) Patterson missed weighted on his first attempt, weighing in at 206.2, but after disrobing and standing behind a towel, he made 205.8 pounds, just under the one-pound allowance.
Eduardo Pamplona (12-2) was next on the scale. Pamplona, looked to be one of the biggest fighters on the entire card, but easily made the 170-pound welterweight limit; coming in at 168.2. Next on the scale was to be Nick Thompson, but an injury in training this past week forced the veteran to pull out. Fortunately, Thompson's teammate Derrick Noble was ready to step in and take his place. Noble weighed in at 169.2 pounds.
The co-main event fighters were next to the scale. David Heath (14-6), stepping in for Travis Galbraith, who pulled out over contract issues, weighed in at 191.2 pounds. His opponent, former Pride star and Elite XC champion Murilo “Ninja” Rua (18-10-1) weighed in at 191 pounds, for what is now a catchweight bout.
Finally, the fighters for the main event were ready to step up to the stage. First on the scale was 9-time UFC veteran Din Thomas. Thomas, who has been outspoken about boxers moving to MMA as well as his war of words with his opponent, came in under the set 160-pound limit. He weighed 158.6 pounds.
After Thomas weighed in all in attendance at the Big Apple Restaurant & Sports Pub turned their attention toward the entrance way for the arrival of former professional boxing champion Ricardo Mayorga.
In typical Mayorga fashion, he walked in smoking a cigarette and drinking. Mayorga bypassed even attempting to weigh in with his trunks on. He had the towels come out and disrobed before ever stepping on the scale. He barely made the weight, tipping the scales at 159.8 and talking to Thomas the whole time.
During the stare down, the trash talking from Mayorga continued. Eventually Thomas had heard enough and stood nose to nose with the Nicaraguan. Mayorga then shoved Thomas and forced Price, Foster, and other officials to keep the two away from one another.
