    BAMMA 3___ Empty BAMMA 3___

    Post  manschesthair_utd Thu May 13, 2010 3:54 pm

So BAMMA 3 is on Saturday at the LG arena in Birmingham.

    here is the card:

Tom "Kong" Watson vs. Matt "Suave" Horwich
Ryan White vs. Seth "Silverback" Petruzelli
LW title: Rob Sinclair vs. Daniel Wechel
    Zach Light vs. War Machine
    Alan Omer vs. Mark Adams
    John Maguire vs. Simeon Thoreson
    Mike Ling vs. Carl Noon
    Dave Lee vs. Jeff Lawson
    Paul Reed vs. Ashleigh Grimshaw
    Billy Harris vs. Neil Seery
    Mike Wood vs. Martin McDonough

not too bad for a domestic card, British MMA seems to be lost in the wilderness a bit since cage rage went under.

Watson is one of our best middleweights and he is improving fast at Jackson's MMA, Horwich is the former IFL champ so it should be a good fight (better than Alex Reid anyway).

War Machine is one of 3 Tufers on the card the others being Seth Petruzelli and Jeff Lawson.
Rob Sinclair is also pretty good, and there are a number of fighters from the up and coming Kaobon team.

Judging by the last event, the production will be good, and this will be shown on Bravo at some point.

They had an offer to exchange any BAMMA 3 tickets for BAMMA 4 tickets whcih will have the originally scheduled Reid vs Watson fight.

This is probably the reason why i was given free tickets, because not many people will be at the event and they want to get the large arena reliativley full.

what are your thoughts about this card, and possibly the state of domestic mma in general???

Few good fighers on the card, BAMMA looks like a good replacement to Cage Rage and a lot less Cheesy! Laughing I think Cage Rage did attract a higher level of fighter so BAMMA has a while to go before it matches Cage Rage's success but it seems to be going in the right direction.

Simeon Thoresen and Alan Omer are both great European prospects, worth seeing how they do. Thanks for posting this card, didn't know either of them were appearing on this.

Lets hope War Machine gets KTFO!

I haven't seen much of Watson, I never made much of him TBH. He was submitted by DR X! and lost to the "beast" Episten. I haven't seen him in a long time though so I assume he has improved as a fighter, especially training with Jackson. Horwill is a decent opponent. He has a mixed record, some wins and losses to good fighters. Big test for Watson.

Good to see Seth back in the action. Good guy to have on a small, developing show.

If I get to watch it I'd like to keep an eye on Thoresen and Omer.

    quick summary;

MW title:Tom "Kong" Watson vs. Matt "Suave" Horwich
Watson enters in trademark gorrilla costume w/ sombrero, Dennis Kang and GSP in his corner. Horwich enters to some Christian rock music thumbing a bible. Horwich should be named the American Zombie for the way he just walked forward for 100% of the stand up. Watson was consistantly tagging him but to seemingly no effect. Watson's takedown defence doesnt seem to have improved since his previous fights and get taken down in the first round, Horwich gets the back and sinks in a choke. the forearm is across the trachea, which is more painful but takes longer to put them to sleep. Watson goes bright red, he survives very well for a long time, but escapes back to his feet and ends the round with a flurry. (crowd goes ape-shit).

the rest of the fight was much the same, Horwich a vastly better grappler and coming close a couple of times, Watson winning the striking but not really hurting Horwich.

Watson wins a controversial UD after 5.

Ryan White vs. Seth "Silverback" Petruzelli

Seth comes out looking for the KO, slips after a attempted high kick and ends up on his back. White verbally taps to a very tame armbar. Crowd couldnt really see what was happening and the only fight above MW of the night ends via a sub in 1 minute so everyone boos.
Seth throws his gumshield into crowd, crowd returns, seth rubs it on his ballsack and returns, crowd returns.

LW title: Rob Sinclair vs. Daniel Wechel
Wechel went into desperation mode from the bell looking for the takedown, Sinclair defends well. Gets a good position on the back of Wechel and rains down a flurry of punches until the ref calls TKO about 2 minutes into the fight.

    Zach Light vs. War Machine

Light is the wrestling coach for Wolfs Lair and team Kaobon, you might know him from the build up to recent Bisping fights.
he takes WM down early, WM reverses, gets the back, puts to sleep, applauds Light for not "tapping like a pussy".

FW title: Alan Omer vs. Mark Adams
Omer picks him apart on the feet with a variety of strikes, Adams takes him down and lies in guard for the majority of the 25 minutes, getting stood up lots of times meanwhile Omer is working off his back and out striking him.
Adams offers nothing but takedowns and blanketing and wins a bullshit UD.

John Maguire vs. Simeon Thoreson - competitive fight, Thoreson clearly winning, almost getting submission twice. UD

    Mike Ling vs. Carl Noon
Noon via RNC in round 1 against the 6'7 Ling.

    Dave Lee vs. Jeff Lawson
Team UK's Lawson (now at FW) via German suplex into armbar
    afro

    ==================================================

decent event, looked like an imitation of the UFC in most aspects. Not many people there until the last few fights.
Jordan and Reid sat ringside enduring chants such as:

"JORDAN WEARS A STRAP-ON, JORDAN WEARS A STRAP-ON, NAH NAH NAH NAH, NAH NAH NAH NAH"
(lyrics interchangable with "alex reid's a pussy")

"get your baps out for the lads"
    etc.etc.

gets several inflatable bananas thrown at them from Watson fans.

man dressed as Jordan and man in gorrilla suit, sitting in a wheelchair with "i am alex reid" t shirt entertained the fans between fights.

Thanks for the recap mate, sounds like a decent night of fights.

Big win for Watson, contreversial or not. Sounds a lot like the Omer vs Adams fight except Horwich was trying to finish. Bizzare and inconsistant judging but good for Watson, he needs to work on his TD defence and grappling now. Im sure GSP and Evans can help him with his wrestling, he might want to take advice from McSweeney about grappling though. Razz

Seth sounded like a dick after the fight but why were the crowd booing?

War Machine outspoken as ever, despite him being a dick he is a half decent fighter but his attitude kind of fucks his career up. Not just in MMA either, porn as well.

Would you say the Omer vs Adams fight was bullshit based on bad judging or because of Adams boring style?

I find it quite hilarious how Reid was ripped into by the crowd.

Not sure why GSP was there to be honest. he didnt do anything after entering with Watson apart from watching the fight, Kang was working the corner.
He gave an interview with Christian O'Connell (that DJ bloke) during the interval and got mobbed. I'm not sure when this will be on TV but the interview will be on there.

Omer/Adams was a bit like Mousasi/Mo, but with more time spent on the feet with Omer picking him apart, and more sub attempts from Omer off the back, and less of any ground work from Adams.

literally all he offered was takedowns.

    for the Seth Petruzelli fight.
    The crowd was booing because:
    a) no-one really saw what happened, it was against the fence, and a verbal tap.
    b) it was a lame sub to tap to, like a triangle-armbar but without actually locking the shin under the knee for the triangle. (if i recall)
    c) the only + 185 lb fight on an 11 fight card ended with a totally anti-climactic 1 minute sub, everyone was hoping for a brawl i think.

he wasnt really being a dick, he was nice and apologised after even though he didnt need to.

just remembered before the annoucement of the Watson/Horwich decision, Horwich started doing a few weak press ups in the middle of teh cage. Watson then copied him.
Then to top that, Horwich tried a backflip....the worst backflip attempt i have ever seen in mma
Laughing Laughing sort of a 45 degree -over the shoulder-faceplant.

GSP was there for "moral support" Laughing

The Omer/Adams decision sounds like a robbery. I don't want to go into Mo vs Mousasi right now but for me Mousasi didn't do nearly enough to win, if Omer was getting the better shots in AND trying submissions it seems like he should have won the decision.

The Petrezelli fight sounds pretty bizzare, his opponent sounds like good old one glove back in the day but atleast he was in some kind of trouble.

I'd love to see that Horwill attempt, sounds like a shocker Laughing

This doesn't make good reading for BAMMA...

On May 15th, 2010 a show promoted by an organization known as the British Association of Mixed Martial Arts took place in Birmingham, England. The card featured a number of recognizable names, including those with Octagon experience on their resume like Seth Petruzelli, Matt Horwich, and War Machine. Petruzelli and the man once known as John Koppenhaver fared better in result than Horwich but all three spent weeks preparing in the gym with the mutual understanding BAMMA 3 would be like any other event.

On June 8th, 2010 all three men are still awaiting payment for the commitment each fulfilled. Apparently, BP isn’t the only dealer of dismay from across the pond with an element of slime involved. Money depended on for training costs, mortgages, general bills, food, family, and any other imaginable want or need remains a promise unkept, and thoughts originally turned towards a future competitor now look at an opponent possibly looming in a ring far different from any used in combat sports – a court of law.

News of the situation first came to light a week ago when Petruzelli and War Machine took to different realms of cyberspace to plead their cases. Said Petruzelli on popular MMA forum The Underground, “This is B.S! We feed our families with this money.” Meanwhile, the Ultimate Fighter Season 6 alumnus went the route of Twitter and addressed the topic in standard form, writing “Sure would be nice if BAMMA decided to FINALLY f*cking PAY US! Or maybe that’s too much to ask? WTF!? Really getting PISSED now! Contract said 72 hours…lol That’s 3 days right? Just wondering because it’s been 3 WEEKS!” He even went as far as to send a message to BAMMA’s account questioning whether or not they were going to pay or if the promotion felt they didn’t deserve their money.

In Horwich’s case, the woman he married a day after an IFL title defense (Kelly) spoke up to elaborate on the situation. “The promoter…had the balls to tell me he didn’t know we needed to be paid so urgently. People think fighters are rich and famous…they are normal people that need their money to eat too. We’re starving over here peoplel!!!!!” She also, understandably angry about things, made it clear she was thankful she and her husband hadn’t purchased a new house as they’d been considering, or else “WE WOULDN’T HAVE BEEN ABLE TO (HAVE) PAID THE GOD DAMN RENT!!!!!”

Fast-forward to this past Wednesday when Petruzelli stated he’d received half of his expected winnings with the remainder promised for payment later in the day while management for War Machine and Horwich, by proxy of his wife, claimed neither camp had received a dime of their purses. Hours later BAMMA apparently made good on their word to Petruzelli and War Machine, yet Horwich was left in the cold. As of Saturday, June 12th – nearly a month after the actual event – the same remains true. (UPDATE: Horwich was FINALLY paid today, a month to the day after the card’s completion.)

Unfortunately, circumstances like the above are not as uncommon as fans (and fighters) might hope nor are they limited to small shows. Far too often the men and women who sacrifice their bodies for our entertainment are victims in an industry where expectations often exceed ticket-sales and PPV buys. Quinton Jackson, among others, has spoken in the past about PRIDE shorting him and delaying payment during the promotion’s heyday. DREAM has been associated with with similar activities, most notably with current Strikeforce welterweight champ Nick Diaz after he defeated Katsuya Inoue at DREAM 3 in May 2008. The same was essentially true in the case of the mid-card fighters set to square off at Affliction III before Tom Atencio folded up shop ten days out from the event. In reality, considering the rarity of a promoter not being associated on some level with questionable financial practices, it’s really no wonder the UFC is the cream of MMA’s crop.

It’s common knowledge we live in a money-driven society where characters ranging from legitimate to downright shady will attempt to capitalize on a trend in hopes of striking it rich. As such, we have to accept the business of Mixed Martial Arts is no different, and the practice of exploiting others in hopes of turning a profit is anything but a newly invented concept. However, that’s not to say people should stand idle while athletes we respect or are personally invested in as fans pay the price after already sacrificing so much for our mere enjoyment. We need to stop focusing so much on the figures and turn our attention to whether or not a contractual agreement was actually fulfilled. When a promotion, like BAMMA, shafts a fighter you need to let your opinion be known both in written/verbal form as well as when it comes to buying future shows/tickets. Likewise, when fighters are paid on time you need to support those companies for living up to their word. Mixed Martial Artists fight for us. Now it’s our turn to fight for them.
