Ricco Rodriguez has to have knee replacement surgerys, and is out indefinatly
Just when you thought Ricco was getting his career back on track, he suffers a big injury setback. Damn. Bellator should try to get Duffee as a replacement.
A serious knee injury has forced Ricco Rodriguez (44-11 MMA, 0-0 BFC) out of a scheduled Bellator 31 matchup with fellow heavyweight Dave "Pee Wee" Herman (16-2 MMA, 1-0 BFC).
MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) today confirmed the news with sources close to the Sept. 30 event, who said a search is underway for a replacement.
Rodriguez initially hoped to fight through the knee injury, but he's since learned multiple surgeries may be required.
Bellator 30 takes place at the L'Auberge du Lac Casino and Resort in Lake Charles, La. The night's main card airs on FOX Sports Net.
Bellator officials initially announced the Rodriguez vs. Herman fight during a Bellator 28 broadcast earlier this month.
Rodriguez, a former UFC champ, had bounced between the heavyweight and light-heavyweight divisions during his current nine-fight win streak. Now living in Louisiana and devoted to teaching, he had hoped to compete in front of a local crowd of fans and students.
Herman, meanwhile, hasn't fought since a May loss to UFC and PRIDE vet Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou at an event in the United Arab Emirates. The defeat was caused by illegal knees delivered by Herman. Prior to the loss, the Indiana native began his career with a 15-1 record (all of the wins came via strikes, and 14 of the 15 came in the first round), which included stints with the now-defunct EliteXC organization and World Victory Road's Sengoku event series.
Herman had been embroiled in a contract dispute with Bellator officials until the recent fight booking.
