    145lbs a really weak devision?

    Post  rudeboyben84 on Tue Apr 17, 2012 6:02 pm

Who exactly are the contenders right now in the devision? Siver who was by all accounts a pretty average 155er just beat one of the top guys in the devision... it seems that there arent any credible challengers on the horizon for Aldo.

Hioki - Highly ranked though doenst look like a challenge for Aldo, he has to be considered the number 1 contender right now though.

Dennis Siver - Journeyman 155er, Title contender at 145. Probabally wont outstrike Aldo nad 100% cant outgrapple him.

Yuri Alcantara - The guy I see as the biggest talent outside aldo in the devision... probabally a win or 2 away right now.

Korean Zombie - on paper he has the Garcia loss and Roop turned his light out, IMO win loose or draw he should have to avenge the Roop loss before he gets a shot.

Dustin Poirier - Korean Zombies opponent, maby a couple of wins away seeing as he is 23 they might want to give him time...

    -------------------

Aldo has been announced to defend his title but no opponent named... who you all see him fighting? Who is an actual threat to him?

Kawajiri would beat the vast majority of the UFC's 145 roster, and could be a threat to Aldo if he can take him down. Don't know what he has to do to get into the UFC though. Guys like Koch, Poirier and Pat Curran are coming down the line.

I don't think it's any less a talented division than any other, it's just still establishing itself.

I think, as Sun says, it's just a matter of the division getting established. Don't think it's any weaker than 135 to be honest.

Charles Oliveira and Jimmy Hettes are ones to watch out for. Diego Brandao is also a beast who could contend in the future.

Combine these with veterans such as Mike Brown and Ross Pearson makes it a decent enough division. Though if pushed I would probably say it's the weakest in the UFC.

Plus the fact that Aldo is an absolute killer. He's a p4p top top guy. He makes a lot of good fighters look terrible.

The lighter divisions will go through this time period though, the first generation of guys of a new lighter division will always be guys who are under-sized in other divisions getting bumped down. It's only when you get fighters who have trained and competed in that division from the very beginning of their careers coming through that a division really fills out.

It's why the UFC's lightweight division when they brought it back in 2005, we ended up with guys like Sherk and Florian dropping weight class and being the established guys at that weight. When lightweight came good in the UFC was with guys like Edgar, Henderson, Maynard, Diaz, Miller, young talents training to be lightweights from the start. Not guys who hit road blocks at higher weight classes.

Exactly. 155 was shocking for the first two years. Was a really weak division.

I think there is a lack of top contenders right now.

A couple of those "would be contenders" are fighting outside the UFC too, however in terms of overall depth of the divison worldwide its one of the deepest. Check out this link:

the top 50 are all very good fighters, and you have the likes of Josh Grispi, Ishida outside the top 50 ...Nam Phan is ranked at #80!

I agree with what everyone else has said, it's going to take time to establish the division. The good news is a tleast now there is a large number of fighters to pick from and so much talent to find outside the UFC.

Koch and Poirier are very talented and will be a force in a year or 2 from now.

Manny G was a no hoper and 155 and became a title contender at 145 when he dropped, im sure there migth be more undersized 155ers who follow him, Tyson Griffin and Siver down (Sherk springs to mind) but I dont think it seems to have the stars other devisions does even 135.

Faber is a legend and the next contender

Miguel Torres is a p4p great and a win over Michael McDonald puts him on the map, likewise if McDonald wins you have an instant contender

Renan Barao is a stone cold killer and a guy who will challenge soon.

Bowles is a star of the devision, he has only lost to Cruz and Faber. Im sure he will challenge again.

to be 145 should be stronger because 155ers are dropping down but to me its the devision id like to see UFC work on the most. I really think that Crusher is the man to sign he could make waves in the devision. As good as Aldos TDD record is I cant see Crusher fighting 25mins and not dragging someone down at some point.

Manny G was ok at 155, he got to the final at TUF and was beating Diaz before a freak injury. He was very undersized in the weight class as well and he still beat some good fighters like Joe Lauzon and Matt Wiman.

Can Sherk make 145? Could be a challenger.

I know what you mean about Crusher, but to be honest I can't see him last 25 minutes with Aldo. I think Aldo would stop him in the third/fourth after a good close fight.

Fully agree with that I just hope the UFC don't push them in to a Title too soon.

At the moment the division is in limbo there doesn't seem to a Top contender apart from Hioki who by the sound of things wants another fight or 2 before a Title shot. There is a tonne of potential at FW just like some have said already in a year or 2 the division like the re-introduction of LW will pan out nicely.
