Wales football manager Gary Speed has died at the age of 42.

The Football Association of Wales (FAW) has told the BBC it appears Speed, the national manager for nearly a year, killed himself.

Cheshire Police confirmed he was found dead at 07:08 GMT at his home in Huntington, Chester. They said there were no suspicious circumstances.

First Minister Carwyn Jones called it "devastating news" and said he was deeply saddened.
He said: "Our thoughts are with his family at what must be a very difficult time for them."

The FAW said: "We extend our sympathies and condolences to the family. "We ask that everyone respects the family's privacy at this very sad time. That this tragedy should have overtaken someone so young and talented is a huge loss not only for his family and friends but a nation as a whole."

Speed, who was awarded the MBE in the 2010 Birthday Honours, leaves a wife and two children.

Phil Pritchard, FAW president, said they would do "whatever we can" to help Speed's family.

In a statement, Cheshire Police said: "At 7.08am on Sunday 27th November Cheshire Police was informed of a sudden death at an address in Huntington in Chester.

"Officers went to the scene where a 42-year-old man was found dead.
"The next of kin have been informed and have confirmed the identity of the man as Gary Speed.

"There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and the family have requested that they are left in peace to grieve at this difficult time."

Police said a family tribute will be issued later.

RIP Gary Speed, a true premier league legend. British Football has lost one of the true greats.

I'm absolutely shocked, I had no idea he was going through any sort of depression. Really terrible news, he's one of my all time favorite players. Awful tragedy. My condolences go to his wife and kids. RIP Gary.

I was stunned when I heard about this today. He was on football focus yesterday and seemed so happy and content with his life, his job and everything. Horrible day.

I echo your sentiments guys. Have not heard about the depression, what's the story there?

Wow just read he hung himself apparently. That's tragic.

Not necessarily. He was probably depressed long before Sunday morning.

    I'm still in disbelief.

Gary Speed, the Wales football manager who apparently committed suicide at his home, had not had a fight with this wife, his agent has claimed.

Hayden Evans, who was the best man at the couple’s wedding and acted as Speed’s agent, said the football manager's wife Louise was bewildered and baffled by his apparent suicide.

Mr Evans said Speed's wife had told him the couple had not argued in the hours before his death.

"Louise is saying that's not the case. She just doesn't understand it," he told The Sun.

"They were happily married and anyone who knows them will tell you that. This is why it's a mystery.

"We genuinely at the moment have no clue whatsoever what has caused it and I have been with the family all day."

He added: "Everybody is asking the same question and no one has an answer. We are all in shock."

He declined to discuss why Speed had apparently decided to take his own life. He denied Speed was suffering from depression.

Very, very strange. I wonder what drove him to do what he did. It just doesn't make sense

Gutted by this, as a Welshman speedy was a hero for many years!

He seemed to do the impossible and get Wales Playing well which hasn't happened in years.

Lots of rumours at the Cardiff city game that he was about to be exposed as gay. No concrete evidence off anyone to support this, don't really see how it's in the public interest to no this and would be tragic to think two kids lost a dad because a newspaper wanted to sell a few more copies.

Wales manager Gary Speed's widow has told his inquest his job strained their marriage and they had an "exchange of words" the night before he died.

Louise Speed told the hearing in Warrington she then went for a drive, but could not get back into the house when she returned at about 1.30am.

She spent the night in the car and in the morning found his body in the garage at their home in Huntington, near Chester.

Mrs Speed said he did not leave a note.

He had sent her a text four days before he died in which he "talked in terms of taking his life". But she said she dismissed it because of their children.

The hearing was told by the team's GP that he showed no signs of stress and depression.

The evidence was given by Dr Mark Ridgewell on Speed, 42, who played for a number of Premier League clubs.
