Its Goodnight Irene for K-1 Empty Its Goodnight Irene for K-1

    Post  rudeboyben84 Mon Oct 17, 2011 9:58 pm

Well the 2011 GP has been called off, A lot of fighters didnt get paid and its safe to Assume K-1 is done for.

Sad really, If I turned on the TV and there was MMA, K-1 or Boxing Id pick K-1 9/10 times, The K-1 GP was the most entertaining event every year for me.

The Greats have all but retired and I dont see it keeping going. Badr Hari was seen as the future of K-1 and this was going to be his retiremet fight before he started boxing.

Overeem has gone to the UFC, Le Banner seems to be getting envolved in Pro-Wrestling, Bonjasky might well be retired for all we know, Schilt is off fighting at some GG event coming up (Not sure if its MMA or Kickboxing) and Spong who was also a big star of future K-1 is training with Rashad Evans to make the switch too. Old boys Sefo and Hunt have made the switch to MMA, If K-1 is gone for good anyone got any good fights they want to post to remember it by?

Anyone reckon there are fighters who might move over to MMA?

Also if anyone wants to post a few promising younger fighters or older guys with MMA backgrounds we might see come over to MMA feel free to...

I dont think we will see any Goldenglory guys ever come over unless things drastically change but one Id love to see is Kyotaro: 6" and under 220 he would probabally be a smaller 205er or cut to 185 seeing as how those Asians hate their weightcuts! Laughing but at 25 years old, with a Karate and Muay Thai backgorund the guy already Knocked Manhoef and Aerts out cold... hook him up with a BJJ coach or some gym like Blackhouse and we could see a star

Singh Jaideep is another one, he is only 24 at 6"6 and again under 220 (K-1 Heavyweight limit) he could be a big ol' 205er, Wikipedia lists him as having a Grappling match on his record, fuck knows what it is without reasearching but he is big athletic and hard hitting. He Knocked Sergei out in under 3 mins so with a bit of TDD or BJJ with long limbs the guy could be the fighter Vera never was.

Mourad Bouzidi is another one who might might make 205 or cut to 185, he has trained under Peter Aerts for 7 years and at only 26 has racked up a 65/15/2 record! He has had 2 MMA fights and finished one by Armbar!!

Any more guys you could see moving to MMA?

Saki is making the crossover I think. He's one of the best candidates.

Yeah Saki and the Russian Machine Gun, Ruslan Karaev was rumoured to be considering the switch. Both of them could easily make 205. Add those two and Spong to the LHW division and the age of the Kickboxing could be in front of us.

If Pat Barry can string togeather a few wins in UFC and be one of the most deadly strikers in the game imagine what guys like Spong could do. A good TD defence or good enough BJJ off their back is all they need. Barry didnt really pick up many MMA skills and Near beat Kongo who has always hovered about the top 15.

Barry wasnt really on any of these guys levels striking wise either. Pat Barry is talked up as a "K-1 Level striker" but he didnt do too well in K-1, lost to Aleksandr Pitchkounov, who went on to loose to Mighty Mo in a low level tournament. Dont mean to Knock Barry as a fighter at all Im a big fan but he wasnt on a lot of these guys level.

Anderson Silvas striking is the best thing people have ever seen but there are better strikers in K-1. I reckon loads of these figthers in their mid 20's especially with other martial arts or MMA experience could have grappling skills in 2 years. Look at how many guys go in grapplers and become a force when they learn to strike.

Look at things like Machida and Andersons Teep to the face KO, Those kind of Kicks are pretty common practice to K-1 figthers. Combos that end in leg kicks arent used much in MMA but these guys rattle them off constantly in fights. People might point out that its a differnet sport but id say its more likely a lot of MMA figthers arent good enough strikers to successfully string togeather combos like that...

Spong training with Evans has already paid off, Evans blasted Tito out with a Knee and was in great shape, I reckon Spong is a monster at 205 and grappling with Evans will prepare you for a good a wrestler as youll see at 205.

You do love that video of Monson!

I see Bloodstain Lane is talking about Hari and Saki going into boxing and claiming he was involved in the move! What a clown.

Hari seems to be set to start training With Nazim Richardson for his Boxing venture read an an interview with him on Boxingscene the other day Nazim seems very impressed with his attitude.

I'll be honest I don't think there will a load crossing over I expect It's Showtime & GG to pick up the can for Kickboxing.

Spong spent the most of his career under 200lbs, he started at something like 16 years old and when he was fully grown at say 21 was a Cruiserweight (under 190lbs or there abouts depending on organisation) he moved up to the Hw devision weighing around 200-210lbs usually and stayed there till he entered the WGP bulking up to 228 to make the 220 minimum weight

He wouldnt even be a massive 205er but cutting from 225-230ish is probabally on the bigger end of the scale, heres him becide evans

    He said

“Rashad is a hell of a wrestler, (so) he helps me out with that,” Spong said. “I have coach Mike Van Arsdale, who’s a hell of a coach, (and) a good wrestler. So, I’ve been practicing on that a lot and try to master that and I think I pick (techniques) up fast. “Like I said, I’m a athlete so I pick up (techniques) very fast and I don’t have a roof, I keep learning and I keep learning at a very fast pace. I enjoy that and I think for me that is the most important, to try and learn stuff on the ground. I’m eager too, I like the challenge, so it’s something new for me and I enjoy that part the most.”

If Rashad teaches him a decent takedown defence, and it literally only needs to be decent, then yes. With that striking? He'd walk through him.

Spong can be an absolute beat at MMA, I always thought he was very underrated in K-1. Shame he was never really able to get the top level, but with the right camp he can be a beat.

Sucks to here about K-1, I really wish one of the big MMA organizations bring in some kickboxing. It would great for a company like Bellator.

How many K-1 fighters do you reckon will cross over into MMA?

    Great shout on Bellator mate.

Not sure how many will. It's Showtime are there to take in a lot of the kickboxers and I can see something springing up in the states in the next year or two. When Strikeforce is killed off, I could see Coker setting up a Kickboxing promotion.

    Kyotaro's Leaving kickboxing for boxing

While the departure of names like Badr Hari, Tyrone Spong and Gokhan Saki are not a surprise, with them the writing was on the wall for quite a while. Kyotaro is the latest name to come up on a short list of K-1 Heavyweights who have decided to move on to another combat sport, this time Boxing.

News came out over the last few hours that K-1 Heavyweight Champion Kyotaro has decided to leave Kickboxing for Boxing and has returned his K-1 Heavyweight Championship. It is not surprising to see Kyotaro looking to compete elsewhere, as he has tried his hand at professional wrestling this year, much like Yuichiro "Jienotsu" Nagashima, but not seen the same level of success

Cheers, I hope a kickboxing org starts up in the States. I've always liked the idea of a merged MMA and kickboxing organisation, but things might get too complicated.

It would be great to see some genuinely brilliant kickboxers in the UFC.
I hate it when they describes anyone who has ever had a kickboxing bout as being world class.

I think that one reason for the domination of wrestlers is that they tend to have great athletic ability..
There is no real comparison between someone who has competed at the top level of US College wrestling and a Kickboxing "champion" like James McSweeney.
