The Death of exciting MMA?

Been thinking about writing a Topic like this, to see what sort of reaction I get from you guys.

I've been watching MMA for some years now, and i've sifted through all the old footage in that time too. For me MMA has really lost something over the last few years, prob since the end of pride well just a little time after it ended. There are a few stand out fighters at the moment but nothing like what MMA used to be like.

Weve lost some seriously good, exciting fighters in the last few years and if there still fighting there towards to end of their careers and are half the fighters they used to be. I used to get really excited for events and used to watch them all very throughly, but i've kinda lost the love for it. Maybe it's because its become so commerial (most due to the UFC), maybe its because fighters are so, sooooo skilled in different displines and just cancel each other out. Maybe its the influx of wrestlers in the sport that create boring fights.

I don't know what it is but i've lost the love for it for some reason... I used to love being the only guy that was into it and showing my mates fights and them being like "woah what the hell".

I know people will be like "your a pribe bummer blah blah blah" but i'm not I was into UFC before Pride and only got into pride towards the end of it through a friend. I just feel really bored by MMA at the moment.

Anyone else feel the same ?

Having dismissed MMA for a lot of years, I can sort of see what you mean. I am playing catch-up and thanks mainly to the lads on here I am getting to see a lot of exciting stuff from the past, and it does seem more exciting. The problem could be that the guys now are professionals, and this is how they make their living, so they can't afford to go full on?
If you can take someone down and hump them for 15 minutes, or stand and get battered for 3, then have to have a big lay off, not earning, etc, which would you choose?
Maybe it should make the odd hightlight KO or sub that little bit more exciting!
Off to do my picks for tonight now, they should realistically be mainly U/D's, but I'll keep hoping (and failing miserably

Think all of those factors are pretty fair to be honest but what i'm curious about is how MMA is going to be in 5 to 10 years when the 'new breed' of fighters are all competing for titles. Guys who have started training only MMA so learning everything.

Is that going to make it more exciting as these guys will be seriously skilled in all arts or will things be evening more boring with everybody just cancelling each other out?

A Jon Jones VS Jon Jones style fight.. if you know what i mean. I'm not saying he's the absolute man at the moment but he seems to have all the right attributes of the 'new breed' of fighter.

It'll honestly get worse I think, you'll always get your one punch KO's in MMA because of the gloves. But fighters are too clever as ridiculous as that sounds.

I think thats why I love K1 it never changes, always excites me... and there is no laying about on the floor for 15 fecking minutes. Don't get me wrong though I LOVE ground game fighters but I like ones that are working to finish a fight with a sub. Where as your GSP's of this world get guys down and only know how to hold them there PISSES ME RIGHT OFF!

I still love the sport today as much as I ever have,more really,but I get what you are saying.

I think because there is so much MMA on now,it may have lost some of the excitement and anticipation you used to get waiting for an event,and as for the fights themselves,I think what you said about the skill level of todays fighters being so much better and the match ups being far more competitive has alot to do with lack of one sided vicious ass kicking you used to get,a lot of fans still want to constantly see that from the sport,me not so much.

Some wrestlers do put on snooze fests but things change,the sport is still young and the fighters are still developing and improving their skills,for me it's interesting to see other fighters develop there games so they can work out the solution to seemingly dominant styles,just like in the day,fighters improved and found solutions to stop the early BJJ greats from continuing to dominate,the greatest fighters will have the answer to one dimensional wrestlers and the true gifted all round fighters will always rise to the top in the end.

I truly believe with the amount of top athletes getting into this sport and learning from all the ground work the top fighters have set before(learning actual MMA fighting and becoming true well rounded MMA fighters and not guys from one discipline that have added new styles to their games),what we will be watching from fighters in 10-20 years time will make todays fighters look very ordinary,just like todays fighters IMO make the fighters from 5-10 years ago look one dimensional and sloppy.

Being a mainstream sport now is a great thing IMO,but it has made it lose some of that old school underground charm,when you watched it back in the day,it gave you that feeling of you couldn't really believe what you are watching,it was more like something that was only seen in movies about underground illegal fighting,but this shit was actually real.

I differ to alot of fans as I get just as much enjoyment out of the technical battles as I do seeing spectacular slug fests,and the more I learn and understand the sport and what they are actually trying to do to each other,the more my love for the sport keeps growing,so todays MMA works great for me,just like in football,I enjoy watching a great build up of slick passing and movement for a goal more than a 25+ yard spectacular thunderbolt.

I never believed that any sport would come close to football for me,but MMA has easily caught up with my love of football and to be honest apart from watching my own team Forest,i'd choose watching an MMA event.

The cage and the "octagon control" bullshit are what's running MMA.

For me, whilst I still love the sport, my feelings towards it have changed, but that's for a number of different factors.

Frequency of events is a major one. When I was younger and there were fewer events, I could justify having a 'late one' and watching all of the fights live. These days, because there are so many events (and I'm older), it has to be a very special card to keep me up until 5/6am. The 'wrestling age' is a stage that will move on (IMO anyway), as most have in the past, but it's this evolution that keeps me hooked. There are many new exciting fighters that are coming through, and there are plenty of 'young guns' coming through to ensure that there will always be excitement in the sport. I hope that in a few years time, we will be talking about the likes of MIchael McDonald, 'Bones' Jones, Rory MacDonald, Jose Aldo, Dominic Cruz and Cain Vlasquez and their achievements as opposed to 'dry-humping'.

Living in the states and getting to watch all the cards at a descent hour,obviously makes it abit differant for me,I get to watch every single event that's on and still can get enough sleep before I start work in the mourning.

I'm sure if I had to stay up till that kind of time,I might have a differant view on it and be abit more selective.

Yes afield and this is what's killing it for me, I rarely watch full events now I tend to just watch the main and co main events. certain cards recently I get the results on here and the fight reaction is more exciting! Whereas when ever a K1 event or something of similar nature happens I'll be on that and watch the whole event and watch it over and over! Prob why I'm now an overeem nut hugger! I rarely get excited about an event, last fight I can remember getting really tizzy about was shogun v machida 2.
